MEMBERSHIP AND DEGREES

In addition to online membership, there are four degrees within the Knights of Columbus. Each degree ceremony imparts a lesson on the Order's core virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

ONLINE MEMBERSHIP: This starting membership is relatively recent and for prospective Knights looking to enter the order. You can join the Knights in an online membership no matter how much time you have to commit and choose to progress to the First Degree. All Catholic men are welcome!

COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP

First Degree -  Charity

The first degree ceremony is for prospective Knights and online members who are joining a local Council. You must be over 18, Male, and a Catholic in good standing. An application needs to be filled out and submitted to a fellow Knight who will read it in at a business meeting. Once approved, the prospective Knight is invited to attend the first degree ceremony which can be done in a ceremony or by viewing a short video.

COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP

Second & Third Degree - Unity & Fraternity

The second and third degree ceremonies are now typically done together, so a Knight will have jumped from a 1st degree to 3rd degree Knight by the end of the process. This is a 45 minute public ceremony, usually in church, where family, friends, fellow Knights and parishioners may attend. A third degree Knight is considered a "Full Knight" and eligible to run for Council office.

ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP

Fourth Degree: Patriotism

This is the "Patriotic Degree" allowing Knights to take one step further. “Sir Knight” is more than a title – it’s an honor. The 4th degree ceremony is a big moment for a Knight and his family. The prospective 4th degree candidate will be in a ceremony and his wife/guest attends functions specially arranged for her. A celebration for the Knight and his spouse is held after the ceremony. These are held once per year in Western New York. The member is still an active participant of the council but also can attend and hold office in the assembly, which has several councils under it.

COLOR CORPS

Council & Assembly Members

Fourth Degree Members are eligible to join the Color Corps.  Sir Knights wear this uniform (recently changed) and carry the sword to honor Christ and His apostles, especially on religious and civic occasions. Hence, the primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to encourage active Catholic citizenship and foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large. The public appearance of Fourth Degree Knights as a Color Corps at religious and civic functions is an important activity of each assembly. By these public demonstrations, their loyalties bring credit to themselves and to the Knights of Columbus.
